County Executive Officer Mike Powers has announced the appointment of Mike Pettit to the position of Assistant County Executive Officer and CEO Chief of Staff. Pettit currently serves as the County Chief Information Officer and Director of the County’s Information Technology Services Department. He was selected after a nationwide search that resulted in nearly 200 applicants.

“Mike has a demonstrated talent for customer service, innovation and project management,” said CEO Mike Powers. “As our Director of Information Technology Services, he put together a team that has worked in a collaborative manner to make the County of Ventura a national leader in government technology and innovation, and be ranked the number three top technology county in the nation by the Center for Digital Government. And because IT works closely with county agencies and departments at all levels, he has a broad and deep knowledge of County government operations and functions.”

Pettit came to the County in 1993 as a project manager and business analyst. Prior to being hired by the County, he had worked in private industry for firms including Hewlett Packard, IP Tech and Freestyle Incorporated. He worked his way up through the ranks in the County’s IT department and was named director in 2011.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to work with Mike Powers, our Board and the County Executive team,” said Pettit. “I share their vision for the future of the county as a leader in innovation, public safety, health care, and economic vitality, and I look forward to being a part of the team that will work to make that vision a reality.”

Pettit will succeed Matt Carroll who is retiring in March after 28 years of service to the County. After a successful career in the private sector, Carroll came to the County in 1989. He became the Director of Information Technology Services in 1998, and in 2007, he was promoted to the position of Assistant County Executive Officer.

“Matt’s work has made lasting enhancements in the quality and efficiency of our services, as well as our efforts to build trust in County government,” said Powers. “And for me personally, he has been an incredible advisor. A person I could rely on for good, common sense judgment. I will miss him and so will the County.”

Carroll will remain with the County on an interim basis to manage the County’s recovery efforts resulting from the Thomas Fire in December 2017.

Pettit, 49, is a resident of Ojai where he lives with his wife and four daughters. He will begin his new duties on March 26, 2018.
